Cape Town offers free Internet access
2006-03-03
Cape Town is offering free Internet access at every public library.
Since the launch of the Smart Cape Access Project, the number of residents who have signed on to use this free service has topped 54 000.
At the official celebration event, held in February, at the Delft Main Library, Western Cape Premier, Ebrahim Rasool, congratulated the City of Cape Town for the success of the Smart Cape Access Project.
“By taking the lead in this province, and in the country, to improve access to ICT to all its citizens, the City of Cape Town has enabled access to government information, thereby ensuring that all citizens form part of an all inclusive and development orientated information society,” says Premier Rasool.
Deputy Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Gawa Samuels, said that the City of Cape Town has taken on the challenges that stand in the way of achieving a better life for all the people of the City.
“As local government, we have responded to this challenge in a practical manner by working in partnership with the private sector and Provincial and National government, through our Smart City Strategy to expose people to ICT and to steer them to where support and opportunities are to be found.”
“Initiatives and innovations like this is not only helping our City and members of our communities to deal with the challenges of creating jobs and opportunities, reducing poverty, combating HIV/Aids and getting access to social and community services,” says Samuels, “but we are fast reducing the digital divide: making computers and the internet available to everyone.
"We must now use these tools to make sure that our people get the skills they will need to participate in our changing economy. Being able to use a computer is key to this.”
