2 Gbps Broadband Connection Anyone?
2006-03-07
Residents in Shoreditch in the UK will soon be testing a new advance in broadband technology that combines the functions of a television and computer, reports TimesOnline.
The new service will provide Internet users speeds of up to 2 Gbps, around 1000 times faster than the current standard in Britain. This speed will theoretically allow for 60 MP3 downloads every second.
Twelve million pounds (around 130 million Rand) has been earmarked for this project which forms part of a larger aim to connect underprivileged communities.
“Residents will receive an infra-red wireless keyboard and remote control that will turn their television into a computer desktop-style environment. Microsoft, Homechoice and ITN are providing software and television channels for the project,” stated TimesOnoine.
This is however not the first time the 1 Gbps residential broadband limit will be reached.
Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN) officially launched their 1 Gbps residential broadband offering in April last year. This service is being offered on a metro Ethernet infrastructure.
This premium 1 Gbps offering will cost users R 1 340-00 per month, but there are more affordable options for the less speed-hungry netizen.
Their symmetric 100 Mbps service is priced at R 212-00 per month while their symmetric 10 Mbps service will cost users just under R 100-00 per month.
