An "experimental" project by Microsoft to mix internet social networking and educational research was open to the general public on Monday. The Redmond, Washington-based software colossus invited any person to join its Web community at so.cl, which was expounded "social." "So.cl is an experimental research initiative, developed by Microsoft's FUSE Laboratories , targeted on exploring all possibilities of social search for the purposes of learning," a frequently-asked-questions page at the site expounded. "So.cl mixes social networking and search to help folks find and share fascinating Net pages in the way scholars do when they work together." The web community had formerly only welcomed scholars studying info and design at select US colleges. As of Monday, people having an interest in becoming involved with the social network were invited to send messages to soclmicrosoft.com. "We expect scholars to keep on using products like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other existing social networks in addition to Bing, Google and other search tools," the facts page at the site related. "We hope to prompt scholars to re-imagine how our everyday communication and learning aids can be improved, by researching, learning and sharing in their daily lives." Nevertheless so.cl hints at having larger desires with banners showing messages inviting folks to "discover similar minded people," express themselves, and have a good time. The opening of the so.cl gates came before a day of Naz trading in which Facebook's freshly-issued shares dropped almost 11%.
