IBM patents bought by Facebook
2012-03-26
Facebook has purchased loads of patents from World Business Machines Co as the social networking firm tries to fortify its intellectual property portfolio in the aftermath of a legal action filed by Yahoo. The 750 patents from IBM cover a wide spread of technology, starting from search to semiconductors, according to someone acquainted with the problem. A Facebook spokesman recounted the company had no comment, and an IBM representative couldn't straight away be reached. Yahoo sued Facebook earlier in the month, saying that Facebook infringed ten patents, including one or two that cover net advertising technology. A classic defense for corporations centered with patent claims is to threaten a countersuit utilizing its own patents. But Yahoo has got much more patents than Facebook. Before the IBM exchange, Yahoo had over 3,300 patents and released patent applications, according to a U.S. State database. Facebook had fifty six issued patents and 503 applications as of December 31, the company claimed in a filing with the U.S. SEC Commission. Facebook, the planet's biggest Web social networking service, is preparing for a preliminary public offering that would value the company at as much as $100 bn.. It is misleading how much Facebook paid for the IBM patents, but tech corporations looking for to build up their portfolios have pushed intellectual property costs higher. Google agreed to buy Motorola Mobility last summer for $12.5 bill, and claimed Motorola's patents were a prime attraction. That deal came after Nortel Networks Co sold about six thousand patents to an Apple Inc-led consortium for $4.5 bill, after Google bowed out of the bidding.
